Biography

Dr. Therese Killeen PhD APN is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Addiction Science Division, MUSC. Dr. Killeen has worked in the field of addiction for over 28 years with a particular specialty in comorbid PTSD and SUD. She has served as a principal and co-investigator on numerous psychosocial and pharmacotherapy studies related to alcohol/substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) and other comorbid disorders conducted in both academic and community settings. She was a former National Institute of Nursing Research and American Nurses’ Association research scholar. Dr. Killeen has been a co-investigator for the Southern Consortium Node of the NIDA Clinical Trial Network for the past 19 years. She was the local PI for the largest National multisite study exploring the effectiveness of trauma informed group treatment in women with comorbid PTSD and SUD enrolled in community treatment programs. More recently, Dr Killeen has been involved in the development and research of integrated exposure based treatment for comorbid PTSD and SUD and is co-author of the Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and SUD using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) manual published in 2014. She has conducted numerous National and International trainings in the COPE model. Dr Killeen was also recently awarded a National Institute of Drug Abuse grant to adapt an evidence based group mindfulness meditation relapse prevention intervention to address trauma and PTSD in women with comorbid PTSD and SUD. She is also part of the MUSC Opioid Medication Assisted Treatment Access team.
